The backyard. The park. A ball, a hoop, and hours that belonged to no one but you and your friends. That world built athletes — and shaped people. We're building it back.
There was a time when a young athlete's biggest decision was which friend to call and which court to meet at. No registration fees. No tryouts. No travel schedules. Just play — hours of it — where creativity flourished, friendships formed, and a love for the game took root quietly, without anyone planning it.
That world is gone. It was replaced — slowly, then all at once — by a system that treats youth sports as a product. Private lessons for those who can afford them. Travel clubs for those who know the right people. Court time at 10:30pm because that's all that's left. Enthusiastic parents replaced by phones raised for social media. The joy quietly drained out.
And the ones who paid the highest price? Girls. Young athletes from under-resourced communities. Kids whose families couldn't afford to keep up — or whose neighborhoods never had the infrastructure in the first place.
The largest national study of youth sports participation ever conducted confirms what families already feel: cost, over-structuring, poor coaching, and the loss of fun are driving an entire generation away from sport. "Playing is too expensive" is the #1 reason youth stop playing — and the problem hits girls and lower-income families hardest.
Tomorrow's athletic success isn't guaranteed. For many young athletes, right now may be their last chance to learn a key lesson, see their name in lights, and push themselves to their limit. The lessons sport teaches — discipline, resilience, belonging — don't stay on the court. If we do nothing, they'll be lost too.
The BackYard brings back the spirit of that backyard — with the infrastructure today's athletes deserve and the equity today's communities require. One facility. Everything under one roof. Designed so that no family is priced out.
Pickup games, accessible private coaching, strength & conditioning, recovery, and nutrition — the full development experience, finally affordable.
No more musical chairs between facilities. Livestreaming and highlight tracking so you stay connected without hovering. One predictable monthly fee covers it all.
Reliable court time — no more 10:30pm practices or getting bumped by school events. Film room, conditioning gym, and locker rooms with athlete names on them.
A safe space during the 3–6pm window when youth are most at risk. Real career pathways in sports for high school and college students.
The BackYard is targeting Bronzeville on the South Side and the West Side corridor near the United Center — two communities with large youth populations, constrained household budgets, and no access to a full-service athletic development facility. Together, they represent an estimated 35,000–50,000+ young people who deserve better than what the current system offers.
The BackYard is in its founding stage. We're validating demand, finalizing our location, and building the case for investment. Your responses directly shape what we build, where we open, and how we price our programs — and they demonstrate to partners and investors that this community is ready. Takes about 3 minutes. Anonymous unless you choose to share contact info at the end.
